The earliest one known was drawn in the 1300s to mark the directions of the eight principal winds. Modern versions usually show four cardinal directions — north, south, east, west — plus the four intercardinal points between them. More detailed roses add half-winds and quarter-winds as further points of orientation. The blooms are large and come in a wide color range, which is why gardeners like them.
