Knowing the difficulty of the brief, he brought in fine artist Michael Flechtner to make the first neon stamp in American postal history.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eHow it was made\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFlechtner took fireworks as his reference and built a physical piece 34 by 44 inches. He heated and bent glass tubing into the letters and the burst shapes, then filled them: neon gas for the red-orange, argon and mercury for the blue, phosphor coatings for the remaining colors.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe result is one of the most saturated stamps the United States has issued — the visual equivalent of the moment a firework opens.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCelebrations are much the same everywhere: birthdays, anniversaries, a new job, a retirement.
