Lieutenant Michael Christian had a more specific reason to care about it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eChristian flew as a bombardier\/navigator in Vietnam. Enemy fire brought his plane down on April 24, 1967 and he was captured. He was held with the late Senator John McCain, who told the story publicly at the 1988 Republican National Convention.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOver several months, McCain recounted, Christian made a bamboo needle and collected scraps of fabric, and with them stitched a crude American flag into the lining of his shirt.
