The ceremony was held at Tumalo State Park in Bend, Oregon, on the Deschutes — one of the rivers the Act protects.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eThe law\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePresident Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Act in 1968 to preserve selected rivers with outstanding natural, cultural or recreational value. Eight rivers were designated at the start. By 2019 the system covered more than 200 rivers across 40 states and Puerto Rico.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch2\u003eWho actually does the work\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFederal and state agencies, private landowners and volunteers all share it, keeping these rivers free of pollutants and of the structures that would otherwise be built across them.
