They also go by wind flower, prairie crocus, Easter flower and meadow anemone, and are frequently treated as a subgenus of \u003cem\u003eAnemone\u003c\/em\u003e. English botanist Philip Miller classified them in 1754. The pasqueflower is the provincial flower of Manitoba and the state flower of South Dakota.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThey favor cool climates and alpine ground, growing at elevations up to 12,500 feet in prairies, open hillsides, woodlands and rocky terrain.
