Only once has the stripe count differed — 15 stripes for 15 states between 1795 and 1818 — before the Flag Act of 1818 fixed it at 13 for good and set the rule that each new state adds a star instead.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTwenty-seven versions have followed. The current one arrived with Hawai'i in 1959 and was first flown on July 4, 1960; no earlier design has lasted as long.
