The days shorten, the air turns, and the boxes come down from the attic. Choosing the tree and hanging the ornaments is the point at which the season actually starts.

Where the custom began

Trees were first brought indoors at Christmas in the 1600s. The earliest ornaments were nuts, berries and fruit — emblems of plenty — and candles and silver tinsel supplied light that winter rooms badly needed. Handmade ornaments were made carefully and kept for decades.

What is on the tree now

Every family has its own version. Some hang decorations inherited from previous generations; others have accumulated their own — delicate glass balls carried over from the old country, a glitter-covered baked-dough star made by a child who is now an adult, the bright glass balls bought for a first Christmas together.

Strings of lights have replaced the candles and plastic tinsel catches the light much as pure silver strips once did. The materials changed and the ritual did not, which is most of why people look forward to it.
