What the flag has stood for

Its design has been revised repeatedly across two centuries. What it represents has not moved: a country founded on freedom, liberty, equality and justice.

The founding argument

Thirteen colonies spent years seeking fair treatment from Great Britain and did not get it. In 1776 their representatives met in Philadelphia, signed the Declaration of Independence, and created a new nation.

The document asserted that all people are of equal worth and that "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness" are unalienable rights. It set out the case against King George III — obstruction of justice among the charges — and concluded he was unfit to rule.

The Constitution that followed was written to secure justice and the blessings of liberty in practice. Over the two centuries since, millions have come to the United States looking for precisely the rights those men described.
