The character
Charlie Brown emerged as the lead shortly after Charles Schulz launched Peanuts in 1950. Mild, insecure, routinely defeated and never quite willing to give up hope, he connected with readers who had experienced their share of disappointment.
Schulz described him as a caricature of the average person. Over a fifty-year run he ages only from four to eight, and within that he is intelligent, philosophical and a capable leader. He also overthinks everything, which makes him a procrastinator, and he is reluctant to begin a day for fear of ruining it. He starts it anyway, expecting tomorrow to be better, propped up by his friends.
The running jokes
Insecurity, philosophy, failure and optimism produced most of them: Lucy and the football, the psychiatrist booth, the long conversations at the wall, and a baseball team that essentially never wins. All of it feeds A Charlie Brown Christmas, in which he goes looking for the real meaning of the holiday and — with the rest of the gang — finds it.
Each stamp uses a still from the special. Art director Antonio Alcalá designed the set.
