How it came about

Art director Phil Jordan visited the Museum of Neon Art in Los Angeles and came away wanting a stamp with that specific quality of light. Knowing the difficulty of the brief, he brought in fine artist Michael Flechtner to make the first neon stamp in American postal history.

How it was made

Flechtner took fireworks as his reference and built a physical piece 34 by 44 inches. He heated and bent glass tubing into the letters and the burst shapes, then filled them: neon gas for the red-orange, argon and mercury for the blue, phosphor coatings for the remaining colors.

The result is one of the most saturated stamps the United States has issued — the visual equivalent of the moment a firework opens.
