The design
A photograph of a traditional diya — a small oil lamp made from a filled bowl — with flower petals around it against a shimmering gold ground, and "Diwali" set in white beneath. During the festival, diyas like this one light the homes of observers worldwide.
Greg Breeding designed the stamp using a photograph by Sally Andersen-Bruce. William J. Gicker was art director.
The festival
Diwali, also called Deepavali, is among the most significant events in the Hindu year and celebrates the victory of good over evil. It is also observed in Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism.
It runs five days each autumn, and some traditions treat it as the start of the new year. In 2016 it fell on October 29 for South Indians and October 30 for North Indians.
