How we know anything about these birds
Bird banding, mostly. Researchers capture wild birds and fit a numbered aluminum band to one leg, and because every number is unique, a bird recaptured or found later can be identified individually.
That single fact makes an enormous amount possible: measuring lifespan, tracking migration routes, and detecting how populations respond to environmental change.
The program
The North American Bird Banding Program is run jointly by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Canadian Wildlife Service, which gather and analyze the data every year. Between 1960 and 2016 the United States alone banded millions of songbirds. The resulting record is what conservation work uses to identify declines early enough to act on them.
