A buttonhole flower is worn for occasions. It lifts an ordinary business suit and finishes a formal tuxedo, and it has been doing both for well over a century.
How the custom started
Nineteenth-century England, and specifically a wedding. When Prince Albert married Queen Victoria she gave him a small bouquet; in response he cut a hole in his lapel and pushed a flower through it. He then instructed his tailor to put the same hole in all his jackets, and given his visibility the fashion spread quickly.
Wearing one properly
Most modern suit jackets still carry that lapel buttonhole, with a small loop sewn about an inch below on the reverse. The stem goes through the hole and is secured by the loop — not pinned to the lapel, and never more than one flower.
The most formal choices are a white or red carnation, a blue cornflower, or a gardenia. It should be freshly cut, and neither too large nor too small for the lapel.
