Black history is not a separate subject from American history, and the Black experience is one of the defining strands of the American story. This issue marks the museum built to hold it.

The museum

The National Museum of African American History and Culture opened in Washington, D.C. on September 24, 2016 as the 19th Smithsonian museum — and the only national museum devoted entirely to African American life, art, history and culture.

Its holdings run to art, artifacts, photographs, films, documents, data, books, manuscripts and audio recordings, drawn from every region of the country and extending to the cultural connections between African Americans and the wider Black experience internationally. It exists so the public can examine that history directly, and see how central it is to the nation's past, present and future.

The stamp

The art is based on a photograph by Alan Karchmer showing the northwest corner of the building, with "National Museum of African American History and Culture" set in the upper left. Art director Antonio Alcalá designed it.

Issued as Forever® stamps, always equal in value to the current First-Class Mail® one-ounce price.
