Helping birds through winter

Bright plumage against snow is one of the few reliable pleasures of February. Year-round resident birds are built for the cold, but there are three specific things that make their winter easier.

Food

Many species cache food against lean weeks, and none of them will refuse an easy meal. High-fat, high-oil foods do the most good — suet, peanuts, sunflower seeds — because they load a bird with calories to burn through the night.

Water

Underrated. Melting snow and ice to drink costs energy a bird cannot spare in winter. Putting out fresh water makes a measurable difference.

Roost boxes

Similar to a birdhouse with important differences. Air vents are few and placed near the bottom. The interior has several perches so more than one bird can shelter at once. And the better insulated and darker the box, the more heat it holds overnight.

Look after the birds that use your yard in the hard months and they will be back to brighten the next one.
