The love letter

People have been declaring themselves in writing for as long as writing has existed. Examples survive from Ancient Egypt, from Tudor England, from Revolutionary America — including the correspondence between John Adams and his wife Abigail.

The Victorian rules

As the practice spread, conventions grew up around it, and the Victorians observed them closely. Men wrote on plain paper. Women's letters could be more elaborate, sometimes carrying ribbons, pressed flowers or a touch of perfume. Both were expected to be sincere without disclosing the full extent of their feelings — a difficult brief, and part of what makes those letters worth reading now.

Now

Most messages are electronic, which is exactly what has made a handwritten one valuable. Choosing to write something out and mail it costs time, and the time is the message. Love letters are still going, and they still say more about commitment than anything typed.
