How it happened

The Space Race began in 1957, when the Soviets put the first artificial satellite in orbit, and the two countries spent years trying to outdo one another. In 1961 President John F. Kennedy set a specific target: land a man on the Moon before the decade ended.

Meeting it took more than 400,000 scientists and engineers and most of the decade. On July 16, 1969, millions watched the Saturn V lift off. Four days later the Eagle lander separated from the Columbia command module and started down.

The landing

On approach the crew realized they were moving faster than planned and would overshoot the target site by miles. Armstrong took manual control and put the module down with only enough fuel left for the return.

Hours later, on July 21, 1969, he stepped out and said his line about one small step for a man and one giant leap for mankind. Apollo 11 had won the race and opened everything that followed.
