The four species

Squirrel tree frog, northern leopard frog, American green tree frog, and Pacific chorus frog — the last still known to many people by its former name, the Pacific tree frog.

Deep history

Frogs have been around for a very long time. The oldest known frog fossil, Triadobatrachus, dates their lineage to the Early Triassic.

Why biologists watch them

Frogs are indicator species: where they are plentiful, the ecosystem is generally in good shape. Two features make them that sensitive. They breathe through their skin, so anything in the water or air passes straight into them. And they live in two environments across a single lifetime, aquatic then terrestrial, which doubles their exposure to whatever is going wrong.

What they do for us

They hold down insect populations, which is not a small service. They have also proven valuable in the laboratory — toxins from dart frogs and enzymes from northern leopard frogs are both under study for treatments of serious disease.
