Why the black cat

Of all the Halloween symbols, the black cat may be the strangest, because the superstition is not universal. In the United States a black cat crossing your path means bad luck. In a number of other countries it means precisely the opposite.

The American version traces to the Pilgrims, who arrived with strict religious convictions and a readiness to condemn anything that resembled evil. It was these early colonists who fixed the idea that black cats were the familiars of witches — and witches, in that framework, were Satan's worshippers. Owning one could bring severe punishment and occasionally death, for the owner and the animal both.

The prejudice has softened considerably. The residual unease has not entirely gone, which is why black cats still get avoided every October — and why one of them belongs on this pane.
