People read the American flag differently — freedom to some, justice to others. Lieutenant Michael Christian had a more specific reason to care about it.

Christian flew as a bombardier/navigator in Vietnam. Enemy fire brought his plane down on April 24, 1967 and he was captured. He was held with the late Senator John McCain, who told the story publicly at the 1988 Republican National Convention.

Over several months, McCain recounted, Christian made a bamboo needle and collected scraps of fabric, and with them stitched a crude American flag into the lining of his shirt. Every afternoon before their bowl of soup, the prisoners hung Mike's shirt on the cell wall and recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

When the flag was discovered and Christian was beaten for it, he came back to the cell barely able to see through swollen eyes — and started sewing another one immediately.

Whatever else the flag stands for, that is what a great many Americans see in it: the price of the thing.
