The set

Twelve stamps for the 50th anniversary of the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, each showing a different river in the system. The ceremony was held at Tumalo State Park in Bend, Oregon, on the Deschutes — one of the rivers the Act protects.

The law

President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Act in 1968 to preserve selected rivers with outstanding natural, cultural or recreational value. Eight rivers were designated at the start. By 2019 the system covered more than 200 rivers across 40 states and Puerto Rico.

Who actually does the work

Federal and state agencies, private landowners and volunteers all share it, keeping these rivers free of pollutants and of the structures that would otherwise be built across them. Brad Arrowsmith of Nebraska put the principle plainly: boundaries do not protect rivers, people do.
