Where the red ribbon came from
Addictive drugs have been a problem in America since the 1800s, but this particular symbol has a specific origin.
Enrique "Kiki" Camarena joined the DEA in 1975 and worked undercover as a special agent. He believed a single person could change the situation, and set out to cut off the supply entering the United States. Working with more than 400 Mexican authorities, he helped destroy Rancho Bufalo — a 2,500-acre marijuana operation valued at eight billion dollars.
People in his hometown began wearing red ribbons to honor him and to declare their own opposition to drugs. The Red Ribbon Campaign grew out of that and has worked with communities, families and schools ever since.
The stamp
