How Earth Day started
The 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill did more than any argument to convert ordinary Americans into environmental activists. Senator Gaylord Nelson and others turned that anger into organization, and on April 22, 1970 twenty million people took part in events across the country demanding environmental reform.
The coalition was unusually broad, and the results arrived quickly: the Environmental Protection Agency was created and major environmental legislation passed before the year was out.
Since then
Earth Day went international in 1990, drawing 200 million participants across 141 countries. More than two billion people now mark it each year — from a single day of protest to the largest civic observance on the planet.
