The story

On December 30, 1696, according to tradition in Guápulo, Ecuador, the Virgin Mary appeared in the clouds — and has been known there since as the Lady of the Cloud.

The occasion was the illness of Bishop Sancho de Andrade y Figueroa, which drew people to carry an image of the Virgin from Guápulo to Quito. Five hundred of them were praying when they reported seeing her overhead.

Franciscan friars founded a sanctuary at Azogues and began the annual Fiesta de la Virgen de la Nube. Nuns carried the devotion to Lima, and from there it spread through Peru and Ecuador. Artists have been depicting the Lady of the Cloud ever since.

The painting

The stamp reproduces a work by an unknown 18th-century artist from Cuzco, Peru, whose figures wear elaborate royal dress — a visual argument about how much the Virgin meant to the people of Peru and Ecuador.
