The set

Ten stamps from photographs by Jim Fowler, covering nine orchid species native to the United States — the three birds orchid appears twice. The others are the California lady's slipper, crested coralroot, showy lady's slipper, marsh lady's tresses, eastern prairie fringed, greater purple fringed, grass pink and yellow cowhorn orchids.

The first-day ceremony was hosted in Coral Gables, Florida, home of the American Orchid Society's headquarters.

The three birds orchid

Triphora trianthophoros — also called the nodding pogonia — is among the most striking members of its genus, with small leaves in dark green to purple and multicolored flowers. The two 2020 stamps showing it feature white blooms with bright purple accents.

These are all wildflowers most Americans will never see in person. That is not an accident of geography so much as of scarcity: every one of them is hard to find in the wild today.
