The set

Ten designs photographing animals, buildings and landscapes in winter, on the premise that the season is not only cold and inconvenient. This one is a large red barn with a wreath on the front, snow behind it and an evergreen standing in the foreground. The first-day ceremony was virtual because of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the postmark from Winter Park, Florida.

Why barns are red

It began as maintenance, not taste. Farmers sealed barn wood with linseed oil, commonly mixed with rust — iron oxide — which preserved the timber and happened to stain the sealant a deep red. Manufactured paint eventually made the mixture unnecessary, and the color stayed anyway.

That red and white pairing is now shorthand for the American countryside, and it has found a second life: couples increasingly hold weddings in old barns, for the rustic elegance and for exteriors that photograph beautifully in any season.
