The four scenes
St. Nicholas on the roof, about to start down the chimney; a fireplace hung with stockings; St. Nicholas winking; and the sleigh crossing the sky. All four come from the poem the set is named for, shortened from "A Visit From St. Nicholas" to A Visit From St. Nick.
About the poem
It first appeared in the Troy Sentinel of Troy, New York on December 23, 1823, published anonymously. Clement Clarke Moore did not claim authorship until 1837 — as a professor, the story goes, he was reluctant to attach his name to something so thoroughly unacademic, and it took his own children to talk him into it.
Readings of the poem, better known now by its opening line about the night before Christmas, happen all over the world each December. For most people the first encounter is a parent or grandparent reading it aloud, and that version tends to stay with you.
