How horseshoes is played

A lawn game with well over a century behind it, normally two players though teams work too. The setup is four horseshoes and two stakes pitched 40 feet apart.

Order of play is settled by a toss-off — one shoe from each side, closest to the stake throws first. The winning side pitches both of its shoes, then the other side follows.

Scoring

Two systems are common. Under cancellation, each side's round total is compared and only the difference goes to the higher scorer. Under count-all, every point stands. Either way a round ends when a side reaches 15, and a full game usually runs to 40.

The White House pit

By the 1940s horseshoes was popular enough that President Harry Truman had a pit installed at the White House. President George H.W. Bush restored it in 1989 and played with staff, family and visiting foreign dignitaries — which says something about a game anyone can pick up in an afternoon.
