Birthdays are marked in an enormous variety of ways: family traditions handed down for generations, customs specific to a culture, or something invented last year. What they have in common is the effect on the person whose day it is.
In the United States the default is a party. Decorations first, then guests with presents and cards, then snacks or a meal. When the cake comes out everyone sings, the candles go out, and a wish is made.
