A love story worth the stamp

History is full of them — Antony and Cleopatra, Victoria and Albert. The modern one most Americans know belongs to Johnny Cash and June Carter.

They met backstage at the Grand Ole Opry in July 1956, both already accomplished performers, and Carter spent years touring with Cash as a back-up singer. Nobody can date the start of the romance precisely; what is documented is that they were not free to be together until 1967, after Carter's divorce from her second husband in 1966 and Cash's from his first wife the following year.

Carter later described the timing as inconvenient for both of them — she told herself she could not fall in love with this man, and then compared it to a ring of fire. They married in February 1968 and had a son.

Neither was the other's first love, and it hardly mattered. Cash credited her repeatedly with helping him get out from under his drug and alcohol addiction. They were together more than thirty years and died four months apart.
