The set
Four Message Monsters designs, made with an explicit goal: get young people interested in stamps. USPS art director Antonio Alcalá collaborated with children's author and illustrator Elise Gravel on them.
The illustrator
Gravel was born in 1977 in Montreal, Quebec, daughter of the writer Francois Gravel and Murielle Grégoire. She trained in graphic design before moving into book illustration.
What made her a natural fit is the work itself — odd, warm, instantly readable characters that children respond to. She has published more than 30 books in over 12 languages and won the Governor General's Award for Children's Illustration in 2012. Her stated aim is to entertain children with funny, endearing characters while nudging them toward curiosity about the world, which is very close to what the Postal Service wanted these stamps to do.
