About sea otters
Sea otters (Enhydra lutris) live in the northern and eastern North Pacific. They are the heaviest members of the weasel family and spend almost all their time in the water, coming ashore only occasionally. Males run 49 to 99 pounds; females 30 to 70.
Why the fur matters
Unlike other marine mammals, sea otters have no blubber. Everything depends on the coat — up to a million hairs per square inch, the densest fur of any animal on Earth. That is why they spend so much of the day grooming: distributing the natural oils evenly, and keeping enough air trapped in the fur to block water and provide buoyancy. Neglect the coat and the animal cannot stay warm.
Status
They are well suited to cold water, and the largest surviving population is off the Alaskan coast. The fur trade of the 18th and 19th centuries reduced their numbers catastrophically, and pressures remain. The species is endangered — and recoverable, given serious conservation work.
