Raven Story 2021 Forever Stamps — Tlingit Cultural Heritage, First-Class Postage

The Postal Service issued the Raven Story stamp at the Sealaska Heritage Institute. Art director Antonio Alcalá built the design from artwork by Tlingit/Athabascan designer and artist Rico Worl.

At the dedication

Jakki Krage Strako, the Postal Service's chief commerce and business solutions officer and executive vice president, served as dedicating official. She spoke to what the Raven Story means to the indigenous peoples of the Northwest Coast, and called the stamp a lasting tribute the Postal Service was proud to be able to make.

Joining her were Marlene Johnson, chair of the Sealaska Heritage Institute Board of Trustees; Beth Weldon, mayor of Juneau; playwright, actor and educator Frank Henry Kaash Katasse; Lance (X̱'unei) A Twitchell, associate professor of Alaska Native Languages at the University of Alaska Southeast; and Rico Worl.

The artist on the work

Worl described Raven stories as a core part of Tlingit epistemology, and said he was glad to share his own representation of one in a form that mixes modern and traditional approaches. His hope for the stamp was that it would prompt people to learn more about Alaska Native and Native American cultures — as traditions with deep roots, and as living communities doing innovative and creative work now.
