The set
Ten Forever stamps covering droids from across the Star Wars franchise — famous and obscure alike: IG-11, R2-D2, K-2SO, D-O, L3-37, BB-8, C-3PO, GNK (or GONK), 2-1B, and C-1-10P, better known as Chopper. Greg Breeding designed each one, placing the droid against a background drawn from a pivotal moment in its own storyline.
Why May 4
The virtual first-day ceremony was held on May 4 — "May the 4th Be With You" — and the first-day postmark came from Nicasio, California, home of George Lucas's Skywalker Ranch.
The STEM connection
The issue also marks Disney and Lucasfilm's support for STEM education through "Star Wars: Force for Change" and the nonprofit FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). Star Wars has been recruiting people into science and engineering for decades simply by making the field look exciting.
Real robotics has not caught up to the droids yet, though hobbyists across the country build working replicas in garages and workshops. Most are decorative or radio-controlled — and that is roughly where a lot of useful engineering starts.
