The four designs

A cowboy hat, a belt buckle, a boot with spur, and a western shirt worked with the symbols that traditionally decorate one.

How working clothes became fashion

All of it started on the range, made for the job. Hollywood changed that in the 1940s and '50s: Western films put Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and John Wayne in front of enormous audiences, and audiences wanted the clothes.

Hats, boots, shirts, bolo ties and bandanas moved into ordinary casual wear and stayed there. Today western clothing is worn across the country — sometimes as an expression of affection for cowboy culture, and sometimes because it is still the right uniform for the work. Either way it points back at a plainer time, and people tend to smile when they put it on.
