The design

Raphael López drew a mother elephant with her calf, choosing the pairing for the obvious reason — the bond reads as recognizably close to our own. The stamp was released on World Elephant Day, and the first-day city, Hohenwald, Tennessee, is home to both the Elephant Discovery Center and The Elephant Sanctuary.

Why the awareness matters

As of 2022 all three elephant species are threatened with extinction. African bush elephants are listed as endangered and forest elephants as critically endangered. Two forces drive it: habitat loss, and poaching sustained by continuing demand for ivory tusks.

About the animals

Elephants are the largest land animals on Earth, with distinct species in Africa and Asia. They socialize, cooperate on tasks, and display emotion in ways that are hard to describe as anything but human-like. African and Asian elephants can be told apart by ear shape, trunk structure, skin color and whether tusks are present.
