The design

Artist Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya assembled a digital collage that reads as an underwater scene, combining photographs of Clark by David Doubilet with an image of a lemon shark by Reinhard Dirscherl. The first-day ceremony was held at Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium in Sarasota, where Clark was a founding director.

The scientist

Eugenie "Genie" Clark earned the nickname "The Shark Lady" honestly. She was a pioneering marine biologist, an early and persistent advocate for scuba diving as a research tool, and a writer whose books carried her fieldwork to a general audience. Her research and her expeditions around the world made her a genuine trailblazer in oceanography at a time when few women were given the chance.
