The design

Don Clark's digital illustration of an elf wrapping presents — a Contemporary Christmas issue built around Santa's workshop rather than the Nativity. The first-day ceremony was held at Santa Claus House in North Pole, Alaska.

A note on Christmas stamps

The first popular U.S. Christmas stamp appeared in 1962 with a wreath and candles. By 1970 the Post Office had permanently divided the category in two — Traditional and Contemporary — so that both kinds of celebration had a stamp of their own.

The elves themselves

Every elf at the North Pole brings a particular skill. Alabaster Snowball, Oxford degree in hand, keeps the Naughty or Nice List and makes sure no child slips through it. Sugarplum Mary is head chef and Mrs. Claus's chief assistant, known for the sugarplum treats she is named after — and, before she came north, for the work she did bringing humans and elves together in her homeland.
