The design

An artist's rendering of the telescope against a field of stars, issued to mark the launch on December 25, 2021. The first-day ceremony took place at the Smithsonian National Postal Museum in Washington, DC.

The instrument

Named for James E. Webb, it is the largest and most powerful telescope ever placed in space, and the successor to Hubble — higher resolution, better imaging, and observation shifted into a lower frequency range that Hubble could not reach.

Working in infrared requires extreme cold, which is what the sunshield is for. The telescope orbits the Sun about 930,000 miles from Earth. It was originally planned for 2007; a long series of setbacks, the COVID-19 pandemic among them, pushed the launch back by more than a decade.
