The design
Camille Chew took her cue from the masks used in dragon and lion dances, building the tiger through traditional paper-cut folk art. Foil stamping lifts the detail off the page. The Postal Service revived the Lunar New Year series in 2020 around this paper-cut mask concept, and the tiger is one of its strongest entries. The stamp debuted at Peter Norton Symphony Space in New York City.
The tiger in Chinese culture
Third in the zodiac cycle; the Year of the Tiger opened on February 1, 2022. The animal stands for power, fearlessness, energy, royalty and protection, and turns up throughout folklore and literature.
Color assigns season: white for fall, black for winter, blue for spring, red for summer — with a yellow tiger representing the Sun and ruling over the rest.
