The set

Ten photographs taken in different states along the river's course, covering both the quieter Upper Mississippi and the working Lower Mississippi. Among the subjects: the Great River Road, a vintage steamboat, a modern barge, and a bridge crossing the water. The reverse of the pane carries a map of the central United States tracing the river and its major tributaries.

The first-day ceremony was held at Beale Street Landing in Memphis, in sight of the river.

The river

At 2,340 miles the Mississippi is the second-longest river in North America, touching ten states on its way to the Gulf. It sustained Native American nations long before European settlement, shaped where and how settlers built, and still determines the economics of the communities along it.
