The set
Sixteen stamps marking fifty years of the National Marine Sanctuary System, covering the marine life and the historic artifacts the system protects. This design carries a photograph of a humpback whale from the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. The ceremony was hosted at the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Exploration Center in Santa Cruz.
The Hawaiian sanctuary
It covers 1,400 square miles and exists to protect humpback whales through the part of their year that matters most — breeding, calving and nursing. Every November thousands of North Pacific humpbacks arrive in Hawaiian waters.
That concentration makes it an unusually good place to study them. Researchers there work on population and on human impacts, and on behavior that is still not fully explained: breaching, tail and flipper slapping, and the songs, which remain the genuine open question.
