The set

Five designs in the Pony Cars issue, each an oil painting of a model that mattered to the category. This one is the 1969 Mustang Boss 302. The first-day ceremony was held at the Great American Stamp Show in Sacramento.

How the Boss 302 happened

Ford built it under president Semon Knudsen with one purpose: to win races. Larry Shinoda, who had designed the Corvette C2, was central to the project, which was run in secrecy — and the name "Boss" came out of that development period and stuck.

The car got engine upgrades, enlarged wheel wells, spoilers and distinctive paint detailing. After further revisions it took the championship in 1970, which is the win that fixed the pony car in enthusiasts' memory. Ford brought the Boss name back briefly in 2012, letting a second generation of drivers experience what the first one had.
