The set

Ten stamps covering different species of early-blooming flowers — the ones that put color back into a landscape before winter has properly finished with it. Gregory Manchess sketched the artwork by hand and painted it in oil. No first-day ceremony was held; cancellations came from Guilford, Indiana, known as the home of Breck's.

Camellias

Camellias flower in late winter and early spring, which is exactly the point of them. Native to Asia and long since at home in American gardens, they exist in roughly 3,000 known cultivars. They are evergreen shrubs, hardy to Zone 6 or 7, carrying large blooms across a wide color range.

The genus earns its keep beyond the garden as well — it is the source of the tea industry — but in most yards it is grown for the flowers and for the fact that they arrive when almost nothing else does.
