The design

Harold Davis photographed a cluster of overlapping red, orange, yellow, purple and white tulips against white. The stamp was conceived as an elegant option for wedding RSVP envelopes, though it works on any one-ounce first-class letter. There was no official ceremony; the first-day postmark came from Mount Vernon, Washington, where the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival is held every April.

Growing them

Tulips announce warm weather, coming up in early spring just after snowdrops and crocuses. The work happens in autumn: plant bulbs before the ground freezes, and plant them soon after buying, since bulbs will not keep the way seed packets do. Use well-draining soil, space them four to six inches apart, and dig each hole six to eight inches deep — roughly three times the height of the bulb. After that they need almost nothing until they bloom. The Old Farmer's Almanac is worth consulting on timing and soil for your area.

Cut tulips

They keep well indoors if you cut the stems on a diagonal and hold them in cool, fresh water — enough to extend the display by days rather than hours.
