The painting
A 16th-century oil by the Florentine artist known as the Master of the Scandicci Lamentation. The first-day ceremony was held at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, which owns the original — it reached the museum through a chain of sales and bequests after passing among a number of notable owners.
The composition follows the conventions of its period closely: Mary in a red dress under a blue mantle, colors that were read at the time as marks of status, purity and royalty.
The series it belongs to
The Post Office issued its first Madonna and Child stamp in 1966 and an Angel Gabriel stamp in 1968. From 1970 onward it has issued Traditional and Contemporary Christmas stamps side by side each year; this is the Traditional half.
