Why he is honored
Standing Bear (1829–1908), a Ponca chief, brought the habeas corpus case in 1879 that established Native Americans as persons under United States law. He won. His statement to the court — that God made him, and that he is a man — is the line the case is remembered by.
After the verdict he spent years lecturing publicly on Indian rights. He was buried in 1908 on ground overlooking his birthplace.
The portrait
Thomas Blackshear II painted it from an 1877 photograph, adding period-accurate color to the clothing. Lincoln, Nebraska, was chosen as first-day city; a statue of Standing Bear stands on its Centennial Mall.
