The occasion

Twenty Forever stamps marking fifty years of the Endangered Species Act, which since 1973 has protected listed species along with the ecosystems they depend on — and has driven the recovery of a long list of plants and animals that would otherwise be gone.

The photographs

All twenty images come from Joel Sartore's Photo Ark, a project to photograph endangered species systematically while there is still time to do it. Each stamp is captioned "Endangered" with the species' common name.
