The stamp

An oil painting worked up from a 2001 photograph by Raoul Benavides. The first-day ceremony took place at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The Black Heritage series has run since 1978, adding one subject a year.

The writer

Ernest J. Gaines, born in 1933, wrote about race and culture in the American South and became one of the country's significant novelists. He grew up on a plantation and credited his great aunt with nurturing his abilities and setting his direction.

He served in the Army, won a creative writing contest, and went back to school after discharge. Catherine Carmier, his first novel, was published in 1964. The recognition that followed included the National Humanities Medal, a National Book Critics Circle Award, and honorary doctorates from nineteen universities.
