The design
A kitten with both paws on a red heart against yellow. Chris Buzelli painted the original in oil on wood panel; it was edited digitally for the stamp. It was issued alongside the 2023 Puppy and Heart stamp to mark the Love Series' 50th anniversary.
The first-day event was held in Austin, Texas at Austin Pets Alive!, chosen because the nonprofit had just recorded its 100,000th rescue.
About the series
The U.S. Love Series began in 1973 and has issued a new design nearly every year since, generally aimed at Valentine's Day mail. 2023 was its fiftieth year.
On cats and affection
Cats have a reputation for aloofness that does not survive close observation; they simply signal differently. Purring comes with relaxation and contentment, and there is research suggesting it aids healing. Grooming, face rubbing and head bumping are all affection. So is rolling over to show the belly, which is a statement of trust, and the slow blink, which is as close to a kiss as a cat gets.
